5 reasons UW could be the best in the business

graphIt’s one of the most prestigious universities in the world, so it only stands to reason that the University of Washington has also produced some of the most highly-regard alumni as well.

While there are some A-list names, many of whom fall into the celebrity category, there are a lot of individuals who might not be world renowned – but are seen as industry leaders, or people who have made the world of difference in business.

Bearing the above in mind, we’ll now take a look at five of these individuals to see what they have brought to the world of business – and how UW helped them get there.

Wade Miquelon

Considering the fact that Walgreens happens to be the largest drugstore in the country, the fact that Wade Miquelon was its Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for so many years speaks volumes about his success. Additionally, he’s played huge roles at Tyson Foods, Procter & Gamble whilst also sitting on the board of a number of other huge firms in the US.

He was a University of Washington alumnus, having achieved a Masters of Business Administration degree in 1989.

William Shaw

After receiving his MBA from UW in 1972, William Shaw’s career has gone from strength-to-strength. Something that might surprise many is the fact that he has always held a role at the Marriott hotel company, meaning that he has well and truly worked up the ladder before reaching his current position of Vice-Chairman of the group.

This all came after his MBA from UW in 1972.

Russ Lea

Next on the list comes someone who isn’t necessarily going to be known to every man out there, but his success over the years cannot be ignored. Russ Lea is one of the most highly-regarded individuals in oil and his education actually started following a Forest Science degree at UW.

Since then, he’s established himself as one of the best researchers in the world. He’s held various research positions at universities all over the country and the fact he was CEO of NEON, one of the biggest projects involved in climate change, says everything you need to know about his reputation.

Avram Glazer

For anyone into sport, the name Avram Glazer will certainly ring a bell. He’s one of the key men who control sports teams such as Manchester United and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While this might be mostly what the general public know him for, he has also been chairman, president and CEO of Zapata Corporation – a company which was actually formed by George H. W. Bush).

All of this followed his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from UW in 1989.

Louis B. Susman

He might be retired now, but Louis Susman is yet another one of the big business alumni from UW.

From a business point of view, he was the managing director and vice chairman of Citigroup – a big deal in itself. Then, there’s the fact he was the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom – which again highlights his credentials once and for all.
