How to Prepare for a Natural Disaster [Infographic]

TRGRTGRIt can be easy to avoid thinking about a natural disaster but it’s important to be prepared for the worst. Stocking up on supplies and practicing drills can reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities in the event of a natural disaster. When you want to have peace of mind and confidence after a traumatic event, there are a few important steps to take.

Determine an Escape Plan

You’ll want to have an escape plan in place on how you can exit your home after a disaster has occurred. Set up a meeting point for all of your family members, which can be at a nearby light post or tree in the neighborhood. Practice drills on evacuation routes to determine where traffic may be present.

Stock Up on Supplies

It’s important to have the necessary supplies and tools on hand in the event of an emergency to ensure that you have everything that you need to survive until you can purchase more items. Buy a radio that has NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards transmissions to stay updated on the local news. A first aid kit should also be available with antiseptic wipes, band-aids, sharp scissors, tweezers, and a manual. Water is also essential, making it necessary to have one gallon per person for each day.

Purchase nonperishable food that lasts for three days, including pet food. Protein bars, peanut butter, multivitamins, food for infants, dry cereal, nuts, and crackers are ideal options to stock up on in your garage.

Take the Right Courses

There are many ways to be prepared for an emergency with courses that are available. Take a CPR and first aid course to ensure that you can assist those who may need medical assistance until they are evaluated and treated by professionals. You can also take hazmat classes to learn how to handle hazardous materials safely and protect yourself.

Buy Emergency Medical Books

Having emergency medical books on hand will allow you to learn how to stop severe bleeding or treat someone who is severely injured. Keep the books in the same area where your emergency supplies are located to ensure that you can stabilize someone until help arrives.

Preparing for the worst will offer peace of mind and can make it easier to get through a difficult situation. With the right steps taken, you’ll be able to reduce the risk of injuries and help others who are in your care.
